Com-Pac Sun Cat 17 shoal draft trailer sailor. For those looking to step out from the small racing class of club boats and step into a more sedate sailing pace of family⁄cruising orientation, it can be a rather hard task to find a late model boat. Whilst the 70’s and 80’s produced many “classics” like the Careel 18, Farr 6000, Clipper 17, Ultimate 18, Sonata 6, Investigator 563 to name a hand full, they are now getting on and good examples are getting rare to find.

The Com-Pac Sun Cat is a wonderful day-sailer that is able to be rigged in less than 5 minutes as it runs a very simple gaff rig and is so simple to rig! Its light weight mast enables anyone to easily step it without the use of any mast raising equipment. The boom, rigging and mainsail remains in place during trailering which is the reason it is so quick to rig. Also fitted with lazy jacks to provide some additional security to the mains sail when lowering or raising in windy weather people of ages and capacity should find this beneficial.
The cabin is large enough, with sitting headroom and 2 full sized berths, for a couple to comfortably overnight in. In the forward hold, room is provided for the installed battery and switch panel. A 12v outlet is also part of the bulkhead to keep the mobile or IPad charged up. As photographed the timbers used throughout the boat add a traditional nautical touch. Storage is found throughout the boat in both the cockpit with 2 deep holds and in the cabin under each of the cushions. A small but practical slide out table is slipped into the cabin and stored under is single burner n metho stove for the cup of coffee, once you reach your anchorage.
If the wind drops out and you need to make way, the Mercury 4Hp ultra long shaft outboard will push you along at displacement speeds easily and efficiently. With a small tote tank on top and a 12l portable tank in the transom, range is assured. At least while tottering along, sun cover is provided by the bimini top!
As many of you know I’m not a big fan of imported trailers, and the previous owner must had headed good advice as a locally made Australian compliant fully galvanised trailer has been custom made in 2014 to marry to the hull of this little ship. Fitted with mechanical over ride disc brakes and with an ATM 1200Kg, most mid-sized cars should be able to legally tow.
